Destination Information

Flying to Faro opens you to the Algarve on the southern coast of Portugal. With many of the country’s safest and loveliest beaches, and year round toasting climates, it’s no wonder the Algarve is Portugal’s most popular region for holiday-goers.

The west coast of the Algarve is best known for its rocky outcrops and cove beaches, especially around the main resorts of Albufeira, Armação de Pêra and Lagos. The coast becomes progressively wilder as you head west, where attractive smaller resorts include the former fishing villages of Salema or Burgau, and the historic cape of Sagres.

The east coast between Faro and the Spanish border is a different experience. Most of it is protected within the Reserva Natural da Ria Formosa, a series of barrier islands fronted by extensive sandy beaches. The resorts here have a more Portuguese feel than those in the central stretch, and first choice bases here would be Faro itself – capital of the entire region – Olhão, Fuseta, Cabanas or Tavira, all of which offer easy access to the sandbank islands.

There are a number of festivals all year round to enjoy in the Algarve, including daily and weekly markets in all the towns. Including the Festival Med, a world music festival, this takes place from the end of June to the start of July in Loulé in central Algarve.

As well as being a great family holiday destination, there are also fantastic golf holidays to be had. Vilamoura, a delightful harbour town has been transformed into a comprehensive golf complex. There are a number of world class golf clubs all along the coast. Surrounding Vilamoura there are even more golf courses, including the cream of the crop Quinta Do Lago, San Lorenzo and Vale Do Lobo. Alternatively to Vilamoura is Tavira to the east, with the amazing Nicklaus designed Monte Rei.

You are guaranteed a holiday with sunshine and beautiful sights after flying into Faro.
