What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Girona? The city’s history, its gorgeous coastlines, or the tranquil atmosphere that surrounds it? Whatever it is, this region of Spain should be at the top of your list of places to visit.
Girona is located in the Costa Brava area of Spain, just north of Barcelona and has chapters of history just waiting to be discovered. If this is something that you would be interested in, there is an array of activities for you to do. Here are a few:
Walk the wall – Girona used to be protected by a vast medieval wall meant to keep out unfriendly armies. The wall was destroyed centuries ago; however, you can walk around a reconstructed version which surrounds the historic centre of the city.
The City History Museum – Girona’s history museum does a phenomenal job of explaining the city’s complex and often turbulent history.
Day trip to Figueres to see Dali – Just a short trip from Girona (around an hour by train) is the Dali museum in Figueres. Dali – an important figure in this region having been born there has his most famous pieces of art and statues kept here for everyone to appreciate.
The Girona Cathedral – A spectacular cathedral filled with the widest range of gothic interior. It is simply breath-taking. Construction first started in the 11th Century and wasn’t completed until the 18th Century. The Cathedral is located right in the centre of town.
Girona has so much to offer as well as cheap bars, an abundance of foods to test and winding cobblestone streets you could spend hours getting lost in.
